You need to use 5 GHz to get good performance, but neither of your mentioned devices support it. 2.4 GHz is pretty much a wasteland in most apartments. This is typical and almost certainly the source of your issues. I'm not use to living in an apartment and I can pickup atleast 10-15 different networks from my living room. I use to have comcast with their combo and would see very little drop in wireless vs wired.
